Trump Ends Trade Talks with Canada
Trump denounced the move as a “direct and blatant attack on our country.”
Tensions between the two neighboring nations initially escalated when Trump, shortly after assuming the presidency, enforced a 25 percent levy on Canadian imports back in February.
In response, the Canadian government introduced equivalent tariffs on American goods.
Although Trump later opted to temporarily lift these tariffs, he conveyed openness to engaging in bilateral agreements that would be more advantageous to American enterprises, especially with countries affected by the trade measures.
Trump has consistently charged Canada with exploiting the United States, claiming it benefits disproportionately from the relationship.
On various occasions, he has even floated the idea of Canada becoming the 51st US state, contending that Washington essentially props up Canada’s economy.
In a statement posted Friday on Truth Social, Trump remarked, “Canada, a very difficult Country to TRADE with… has just announced that they are putting a Digital Services Tax on our American Technology Companies, which is a direct and blatant attack on our Country.”
“Based on this egregious Tax, we are hereby terminating ALL discussions on Trade with Canada, effective immediately,” the president asserted.
