Canada Considers Social Media Restrictions, New Digital Regulator
The proposed bill, expected as early as Wednesday and referred to as the Digital Safety Act along with the Digital Safety Commission of Canada Act, would also address potential risks linked to the growing use of artificial intelligence chatbots.
Identity and Culture Minister Marc Miller, who is leading the initiative, emphasized the urgency of the measure. “I think it's obvious why it's priority. Kids are dying,” he said while arriving for a Cabinet meeting.
Miller and Justice Minister Sean Fraser declined to provide full details of the legislation before its formal presentation in the House of Commons. However, Miller said the government intends to take “all reasonable measures” to improve child safety online.
Fraser addressed concerns over potential limits on free expression, arguing that safety measures and civil liberties are not mutually exclusive. “You don't have to give up your freedoms in order to ensure people can live safely in a society,” he said.
